Choosing a screenshot Chrome extension
Chrome has dozens of screenshot extensions and they differ far more than their store listings suggest. Six things decide whether one fits your work: full page capture, scroll areas, where the image is processed, permissions, editing and export. GoFullScreenshot is free, captures the entire page, and keeps every step inside your browser.
Six things to check before you install
Full page capture that really scrolls
A screenshot extension should capture everything below the fold, not only the visible window. Check that it scrolls and stitches, and that it can also capture panels that scroll inside the page.
Where the image is processed
Some extensions upload captures to a server to create a share link. Others keep everything in the browser. If your screenshots contain client data, internal dashboards or personal information, local processing matters.
Permissions the extension asks for
Read the Chrome Web Store permission list. Broad host access is normal for capture tools, but an extension that also asks for unrelated access deserves a second look.
Editing without a second app
Blur, redact, arrows, text and crop directly after capture save a round trip through an image editor. Redaction in particular should happen before the file leaves your machine.
Export formats
PNG for lossless quality, JPEG or WebP for smaller files, PDF for reports, and clipboard copy for Slack, Teams or Docs. A single fixed format gets limiting fast.
Very tall pages
A 20,000 pixel capture is hard to read and hard to upload. Splitting it into numbered parts with overlap keeps text readable and works far better as AI input.
GoFullScreenshot compared to typical cloud screenshot tools
Feature sets change often, so check the current listing of any extension you compare. The right-hand column describes patterns common to cloud-based screenshot tools, not one specific product.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best screenshot extension for Chrome?
- That depends on what you capture. For whole scrolling pages, panels inside web apps, and screenshots you would rather not send to a server, GoFullScreenshot covers all three: it captures, stitches, edits and exports entirely inside your browser, for free.
- Do screenshot Chrome extensions upload my screenshots?
- Many do, because cloud storage and share links are part of their product. Others process locally. The Chrome Web Store privacy section and the extension's own privacy policy tell you which model applies.
- Can a Chrome extension screenshot any page?
- Almost any page. Chrome blocks every extension on chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store and the built-in PDF viewer, so no extension can capture those. Local files work only if you allow file URL access for the extension.
- Is a screenshot extension safe to install?
- Check who publishes it, what permissions it requests, whether it has a real privacy policy, and whether captures leave your device. New developers can also show an Enhanced Safe Browsing notice in Chrome while their store history builds up, which is a reputation signal rather than a security finding.
- Do I need an extension at all?
- Chrome DevTools has a Capture full size screenshot command that works for simple pages. It gives you a raw PNG with no editing, and it struggles with sticky headers, lazy-loaded content and inner scroll panels.
