How to take a scrolling screenshot in Chrome
A scrolling screenshot captures everything below the fold, not just the visible window. Chrome does not ship one as a regular feature, but a free extension does it in one keystroke: install GoFullScreenshot, press Alt+Shift+S, and the page scrolls, captures and stitches itself into a single full-resolution image that opens in a new tab.
Chrome has no built-in scrolling screenshot: your options
Your operating system's screenshot key captures pixels that are currently on screen. Anything below the fold does not exist yet as far as the screen is concerned. You have three realistic options in Chrome: a full page screenshot extension, the DevTools Capture full size screenshot command, or printing to PDF, which reflows the layout into print styles. Only the first gives you a faithful image with editing tools.
Scroll and stitch with the extension, step by step
- 1
Let the page finish loading
On feeds, infinite lists and image galleries, scroll once to the bottom, then return to the top. This forces the browser to render everything before the capture starts.
- 2
Press the shortcut
Alt+Shift+S on Windows and Linux, Option+Shift+S on macOS. GoFullScreenshot starts the capture immediately. You can change the shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
- 3
Let it scroll and stitch
The page scrolls itself section by section. Sticky headers and floating chat widgets are accounted for during stitching, so the same bar does not repeat down the image.
- 4
Edit, copy or export
The stitched image opens in a new tab with a built-in editor: pen, highlighter, text, arrows, shapes, blur, redact and crop. Then copy it to the clipboard or download it as PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.
Scrollable panels and side panels
In chat apps, mail clients and admin dashboards the page itself often does not scroll at all: a panel inside it does. A tool that only scrolls the window captures the same visible frame over and over. Smart capture detects the relevant scroll container instead of assuming the window, and you can force main content only or scrollable side panel mode when a layout is unusual.

Infinite scroll and lazy loading
Feeds and long lists only render rows that have been visible. If you capture immediately, the bottom of the image is blank or repeats a loading spinner. Scroll to the point where you want the capture to end, return to the top, then start the capture. For very tall results, export numbered parts of 3000, 4000 or 5000 pixels with 160 pixels of overlap so the text stays readable.
- Scroll to the bottom once before capturing
- Close cookie banners and chat widgets first
- Pause carousels and video
- Export overlapping parts for very tall pages
Scrolling screenshot on Mac and Windows
Neither macOS nor Windows has a native scrolling screenshot for web pages: Cmd+Shift+4, PrtScn and Win+Shift+S stop at the edge of the screen. In Chrome the extension method above is identical on both systems. Platform specifics are in the Mac guide and the Windows 11 guide.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I take a scrolling screenshot in Chrome?
- Install GoFullScreenshot and press Alt+Shift+S on any page. It scrolls, captures and stitches the entire page into one image, then opens it in a new tab for editing and export. No account and no upload are involved.
- Does Chrome have a built-in scrolling screenshot?
- Not as a normal feature. DevTools has a Capture full size screenshot command (Ctrl+Shift+P, then type screenshot), which renders the whole document in one go rather than scrolling. It works for simple pages but produces a raw PNG and struggles with sticky elements, lazy-loaded content and inner scroll panels.
- How do I screenshot a whole page that scrolls inside a panel?
- Chat apps, mail clients and dashboards often keep the window fixed and scroll a panel inside it. Smart capture detects that panel automatically; if a layout is unusual you can force main content only or scrollable side panel mode, and the choice is remembered.
- Why does my scrolling screenshot repeat the header?
- Because the header is position: fixed or sticky, so it stays on screen in every individual capture. A stitcher that is aware of fixed elements removes those duplicates; a naive one does not.
- Does a scrolling screenshot work on Mac and Windows?
- Yes. GoFullScreenshot is a Chromium extension, so it works identically in Chrome, Edge and Brave on macOS, Windows, Linux and ChromeOS. The shortcut is Option+Shift+S on macOS and Alt+Shift+S elsewhere.
- Are my scrolling screenshots uploaded anywhere?
- No. Capturing, stitching, editing and exporting all happen locally in your browser. There is no backend server, no account and no analytics in the extension.
